matali crasset is a designer. She comes up with new objects. Yet her goal is not to trigger acts of consumption, but rather to heal our societies and re-energize our conversation with the environment. For matali crasset, thinking about how and where we live is first and foremost about centering restitution by designing architectures and lifestyles that give back to the Earth some of what we take from it.
Her creative process is rooted in the straightforward principle of setting our gaze off-kilter. Taking a step sideways lets us question our habits of thought and develop sensitivity to the needs of all living beings. Writing feeds into her work, creating a fantasy realm for exploring and reinventing new forms of habitability. Her wall hangings, drawings and narratives imagine communities able to adapt to social, political, and climate crisis. This breaks new ground for other narratives and ecotopias where new ways of living in the world can flourish.
matali crasset identifies not as an artist, but as a designer finely attuned to her surroundings and environment. She places a premium on re-use, sourcing her productions from and collaborating with local artisans. By taking on the mantle of our everyday habits, she generates shockwaves with the potential to bring about concrete change in how we interact with the world.
matali crasset is a French designer. She was born in 1965 and lives and works in Paris.
