Sound installation
Aluminum, steel and copper wires, Arduino automated relay module, e-bows (181×116.8x8x4cms)
An electromagnetic partition made of resonance, Corralejas is a metaphor for tradition. And freedom? There are two images behind this sound object-installation project. The first is that of the partition. The partition as a symbol of the impossibility of access to land. One of the most important factors in the Colombian conflict was land ownership. For several decades, thousands of peasants were driven off their land by paramilitary violence, with the great complicity of the government and an elite made up largely of cattle farmers. The second image is that of electricity. Steel wires are set in motion by a robotic system of electro-imans producing magnetic fields. The ropes begin to resonate, creating an imposing, enveloping atmosphere of sound. An inescapable, invisible prison built in abstraction of the pain of the victims and the silence of the victimizers. The name Corralejas refers to the popular fiestas in this region of northern Colombia, during which several novillos are fought in the same arena at the same time, and the spectators are free to enter as improvised bullfighters.

“The discovery of this sound work at the bend in the road is unusual. There’s something magical about the installation space under a tree, as if the plant were protecting a secret place. The strange suspensions, which from a distance might resemble fruit, are in fact cymbals suspended at different heights. An electronic device uses inductors to transmit very light sounds to the metal surfaces, each of which vibrates with a distinct timbre. The particular geometry of the instrument propagates the vibrations in an omnidirectional way, a form of reverberation that the artist combines with a surround effect that makes the sounds travel. A spatialization of sound that involves bodies in sound trajectories and produces a real presence under this natural dome. The visitor’s attention is drawn back to a moment of intimacy, creating a kind of empathy with nature all around. Nadia El Beblawi, art historian

MULTIVERSE OF A BIRDCAGE
Alexandre Joly & Daniel Zea
Sound installation
Piezos, piano strings, copper wire and wooden panels
Alexandre Joly is accustomed to a world in which the dreamlike plays a decisive role, giving rise to a highly personal style characterised by a singular use of piezoelectric loudspeakers; small, membrane-less loudspeakers whose acoustic behaviour changes according to the medium used as a resonant body. Magnetised on metal rods, these small golden discs are connected with copper wire and piano strings. The project is conceived as an assembly of thousands of piezos, organised in space to create a 17-channel acousmonium that transforms the museum hall into a dream space for a week.
With the support of the Fonds cantonal d’art contemporain, DCS, Geneva
Throughout the festival, the public will be able to discover this installation and hear electroacoustic works by: Agathe Max, Daniele Bravi, Santiago Diez Fischer, Eric Maestri, Emma Souarce, Daniele Ghisi, Alexandre Joly, John Menoud, Olga Kokcharova, Stéphane Borrel, Francisco Huguet, Andrea Sarto, Panayiotis Kokoras, Marie Delprat, Mario Lorenzo, D’incise, Simone Aubert, Laurent Bruttin, Nathalie Rebholz, Francisco Meirino, Alberto Bernal, Mauricio Rodriguez, Romane Chabrol aka Horowitz Johan Treichel, Yota Morimoto, Eduardo Imasaka, Fernando Garnero, Patrick Schleuter, José Miguel Fernández, Ana Maria Romano, Laurent Estoppey, Arturo Corrales, Andrea Agostini, Gilbert Nouno, Carlos Iturralde, Tomoko Sauvage and Daniel Zea.
WAÏRA – ENSEMBLE VORTEX
Electroacoustic ritual
Alexandre Joly is accustomed to a world in which the dreamlike plays a decisive role, giving rise to a highly personal style characterised by sounds with a singular mode of diffusion, via piezos. These are speakers the size of communion wafers, without membranes, whose acoustic behaviour changes according to the medium used as a resonating body: magnetised on nails, these small golden discs are connected with brass wire and steel piano strings. The project is conceived as an assembly of 1010 of these piezos, organised to build a 17-channel electroacoustic ecosystem that will transform the museum hall into a dreamlike place for a week. This will include a loop of miniatures donated by a number of composers and friends with whom Vortex has worked over the last three decades.
This exceptionally large-scale installation is the ideal sound system for the electroacoustic concert that closes the Festival Les Amplitudes 2024.
